A joyful, structured and culturally rich Mandarin learning journey for children aged 5–11

Welcome to Herts Mandarin Club.

Our Mandarin Club is designed to nurture children’s interest in Chinese while building strong language foundations in a fun, relaxed and supportive environment. In keeping with the ethos of UK primary school clubs, our programme places emphasis on language exposure, speaking confidence and enjoyment in learning.

We believe children learn best when they feel happy, engaged and successful. Through interactive activities, storytelling, games, songs and cultural experiences, pupils develop a natural feel for Mandarin while growing in confidence and curiosity.

Herts Mandarin Club

Key Stage 1 (Years 1–2)

In Key Stage 1, children are introduced to Pinyin (Chinese phonics), essential vocabulary, simple sentence patterns and engaging picture-book stories.

Our KS1 core books include:

  • Mandarin Adventure Club – Year 1

  • Mandarin Adventure Club – Year 2

Lessons are lively, structured and interactive. Through songs, movement, games and hands-on activities, children are encouraged to listen, speak and participate with confidence. The focus at this stage is on building strong foundations and ensuring a joyful first experience of learning Mandarin.

Key Stage 2 (Years 3–6)

In Key Stage 2, the programme follows a four-year rotating cycle rather than a strict year-by-year structure. This flexible approach allows both long-term learners and new joiners to access learning at an appropriate level.

The KS2 curriculum develops:

  • Pinyin accuracy and spoken Mandarin

  • Sentence structure and conversational skills

  • Chinese character recognition and reading

  • Cultural awareness and understanding of traditions

Our KS2 learning pathway includes:

  • Mandarin Through Music – Year A

  • The Panda Pinyin Adventure – Year B

  • My First 180 Chinese Characters – Year C

  • Discovering Chinese Culture – Year D

Each lesson includes differentiated activities to provide appropriate challenge and ensure steady progress. Over time, pupils develop strong listening, speaking and early reading skills while maintaining enthusiasm and confidence in using Mandarin.

Our Commitment

At Herts Mandarin Club, we are proud to nurture confident, curious learners who enjoy their Mandarin journey and develop a broader global perspective.
