At Herts Mandarin Club, we offer a unique, engaging, and culturally rich Mandarin learning experience for pupils across all primary schools. Our structured Whole School Mandarin Programme allows students to develop Mandarin language skills year by year—starting with playful songs and games and progressing towards confidence in listening, speaking, reading and writing. 

Whether your school is new to Mandarin or looking to expand language provision, our flexible, curriculum-aligned club can seamlessly fit into your enrichment or extracurricular offering.

🏫 Herts Mandarin Club Learning Progression

🐣 预备级别 (Pre-Foundation Level): Sing and Play Mandarin (1 Year)

Focus: Introduction to Mandarin through music, games, and culture

  • Culture: I can recognise and name key elements of Chinese culture (e.g., festivals, food, symbols).

  • Singing: I can sing 10–20 Chinese children’s songs.

Skills Progression

  • Listening: I can understand some familiar spoken words.

  • Speaking: I can repeat and say simple words.

  • Reading: I can recognise basic Chinese radicals.

  • Writing: I can trace simple strokes and begin to understand character structure.

🐼 第1级 (Level 1): Sing and Learn Mandarin (1 Year)

Focus: Building vocabulary and cultural awareness through songs and stories

  • Culture: I can talk about Chinese festivals and celebrations.

  • Singing: I can sing 20–30 Chinese children’s songs and understand their meaning.

Skills Progression

  • Listening: I can understand more familiar words and phrases.

  • Speaking: I can say more words and short phrases.

  • Reading: I can read 30–60 simple Chinese characters.

  • Writing: I can copy or write 30–60 basic characters.

🧧 第2级 (Level 2): Theme-Based Mandarin (1 Year)

Focus: Using Mandarin in daily themes and cultural contexts

  • Culture: I am knowledgeable about Chinese traditions and festivals.

  • Poetry: I can read or recite 3–5 Chinese poems and understand their main messages.

Skills Progression

  • Listening: I can understand a range of familiar spoken phrases.

  • Speaking: I can answer questions and give basic personal information.

  • Reading: I can understand phrases and read 30–60 characters.

  • Writing: I can write 1–2 short sentences using prompts (20–30 characters).

📚 第3级 (Level 3): Jinbu 1 (2 Years)

Focus: Communicating in structured sentences on familiar topics

  • Culture: I can talk about Chinese festivals, greetings, food, family, school life, and hobbies.

  • Poetry: I can read or recite 5–10 Chinese poems and understand key themes.

Skills Progression

  • Listening: I can understand the main points of short spoken passages.

  • Speaking: I can ask and answer questions on familiar topics.

  • Reading: I can read and understand 60–100 characters.

  • Writing: I can write short supported sentences (30–50 characters).

🏮 第4级 (Level 4): Jinbu 2 (2 Years)

Focus: Developing confidence in conversation and writing on familiar topics

  • Culture: I can talk about Chinese cities, festivals, and travelling in China.

  • Singing: I can sing 3–5 popular Chinese songs.

Skills Progression

  • Listening: I can understand the main points and details in spoken texts.

  • Speaking: I can take part in conversations and express opinions.

  • Reading: I can read 100–150 characters and understand written details.

  • Writing: I can write a short paragraph on familiar topics (50–100 characters).
